Looking After Your Lawn
Does your lawn look tired and worn out? Now is a great time to get rid of the weeds and make it green. Here are some tips for making your lawn the envy of your neighbours.
The lawn is the most important part of most garden and it needs to be functional while remaining good to look at all year round. This can be difficult to achieve especially if you have children playing and especially if you have a dog or two.
Keeping your lawn healthy requires a bit of work at different times of the year.
Here are some tips to keep your lawn looking green and healthy all year round:
- Get rid of the moss
Moss is a lawn’s biggest enemy and needs to be kept on top of. Rake out the moss and any dead grass or thatch that has built up on the surface. Moss likes waterlogged and compacted soil so to prevent moss in the future, spike the lawn with a fork, then brush sand into the holes to keep them open and aid drainage. Now cut your lawn and treat it with a moss remover and fertilizer The moss will turn yellow and die and a couple of weeks later your lawn will become green and lush.
- Re-grass worn patches
After the summer of wear and tear bare patches are bound to appear. Try to avoid leaving bare patches in your lawn as weed will take the opportunity to grow there. Rake out any dead grass and use a fork to punch holes in the bare area to loosen the hard soil surface. Level the soil then sprinkle on grass seed. Water thoroughly and often for the first 3 weeks.
- How often to mow your lawn
Mow your lawn no more than once every 2 weeks to allow for a healthy root system. Added grass length helps to shade out weeds. Be careful not to leave large piles of dead or long grass, it’s okay to leave a fine layer of cuttings but no more than that. In Autumn, give it one last mow. Set your mower to a low setting and give the lawn a close buzz before winter sets in. This helps the soil dry out more quickly in the spring, which leads to a lusher lawn.
- Get rid of the weeds and feed your lawn
Use a regular weed killer for a weed free immaculate lawn Feed your lawn and top up nutrients by applying a lawn feed.
By keeping on top of these few jobs you can enjoy a beautiful lawn that will be the envy of your neighbours all year round.
